This online course is the perfect entry point to the world of wine. Ideal for the beginner wine enthusiast, or those starting a career in wine or hospitality.

24th Feb 2020 - course start date - you will have access to the online course prior to this date, this is when the online tutor is avaialble to you

29th Feb 2020 - exam, in person, in the classroom


About the course

Learn about wines through a 4 week online study programme that is flexible to work around your existing commitments. The Level 1 Award in Wines Online covers the same syllabus as the classroom course, but through a supported and interactive Online Classroom which allows you to study alongside your peers under the guidance of a dedicated educator. Please note that the exam is completed in person and not online.

You will learn how to taste wine using a systematic approach and be able to identify the main styles of wine. You’ll also learn to apply these to your own food and wine choices.

Tasting is an essential part of studying for this course, and you will need to taste a minimum of 6 wines (not provided, but you will be given guidance on the styles to taste).

Successful students will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.

Common wine grapes and their characteristics

How to make food and wine pairings

Online tasting of six wines with educator feedback (students to provide their own samples)

How to store and serve wine

How to describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)


Do I need any prior knowledge?

No prior knowledge is required. The course is delivered online and in English therefore basic computer literacy, internet navigation skills and a good level of English are required.


What study options are available?

The course is delivered online over four weeks with a minimum of three hours study per week recommended to successfully complete the course. Regular access and participation is essential.

The course includes an attended examination at one of our venues.


Note that the exam is not online and takes place at East London Wine School, on 29th Feb 2020. The exam consists of 30 multiple choice questions to be completed in 45 minutes. To pass you must correctly answer 70% of the questions.


This qualification is Ofqual regulated.
